{"id":927,"date":"2009-09-18T20:48:23","date_gmt":"2009-09-18T20:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chocobeam.me\/playground\/2009\/09\/3d-freedom-my-ass\/"},"modified":"2009-09-18T20:48:23","modified_gmt":"2009-09-18T20:48:23","slug":"3d-freedom-my-ass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/har0ld.com\/playground\/2009\/09\/3d-freedom-my-ass\/","title":{"rendered":"3D freedom my ass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Arial\">   <\/p>\n<p>I have to say it: I hate 3D <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_person_(video_games)#Third_person_view_games\" target=\"_blank\">third person view<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Golden Warriors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/18828270@N00\/3931409055\/\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"Golden Warriors\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3509\/3931409055_c820fc0468.jpg\" \/><\/a>       <br \/><em>Hours of play like that\u2026 Mmmh, maybe not.<\/em>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>That makes 90% of AAA titles sort of meh for me.<\/p>\n<p>From a player point of view I hate it because having your character stabbed in the back while you can\u2019t see shit just sucks so much. Alone in the Dark was the first to fully demonstrate that.<\/p>\n<p>Of course a lot of progress has been done since then going from static cameras to dynamic ones but still, it\u2019s always that Third Person View (TPV) that makes some situation totally unfair and not fun at all.<\/p>\n<p>Also as <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.gawker.com\/~r\/kotaku\/full\/~3\/HSO7icKPcv4\/can-patrice-mode-solve-gamings-back-problem\" target=\"_blank\">Kotaku was writing a few days ago<\/a>, it\u2019s really boring to have the back of your character for hours. That\u2019s what you are going to see the most. His\/her ass\/back. You couldn\u2019t see why there was a lot of bikini-style female characters starting with Lara\u2019s 70s indy-ish shorts? Well now you know. <\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bayonetta ass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/18828270@N00\/3932191618\/\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"Bayonetta ass\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2629\/3932191618_8c89c46989.jpg\" \/><\/a>       <br \/><em>Hours of work.. Hours of watching pr0n too I guess <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Also, that\u2019s why there is a lot of cinematics in these games, so you don\u2019t have this <em>\u201ccorridor\u201d<\/em> view all the time. Problem is, cinematics are no games. <\/p>\n<p>   <object width=\"560\" height=\"340\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/dOqND_TTxH4&amp;hl=fr&amp;fs=1&amp;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/dOqND_TTxH4&amp;hl=fr&amp;fs=1&amp;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\"><\/embed><\/object>    <\/p>\n<p>Now from a developer point of view, 3D camera is a bitch. Almost nobody got it right, except Nintendo. 3D camera is an insane mind fuck to code, shape and make it perfect in every kind of situation, everywhere in the game, without creating bugs. Of course there\u2019s no generic way <em>to do it well<\/em>, it depends entirely on what your game is about. You definitely can say that this is a <em>massive<\/em> problem.<\/p>\n<p>One of the trick is to do it ala <em>\u201cjapanese\u201d<\/em>: make the camera quite far away so that the player feels a bit of freedom, use as much special effects as you can so that the player forget the camera rigidness in a 3D world and then you have Devil May Cry\/God of War\/Bayonetta.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really something I hate in single-player games, it\u2019s just too noisy for me. When aesthetic is special I can have it a bit (Madworld, No More Heroes).<\/p>\n<p>In MMOs it\u2019s different. There\u2019s no fast action pace everytime or you don\u2019t have complex task to do like sneaking around a fortress in a realistic way, so it\u2019s less a problem. You\u2019re only watching stats while chatting in a text box anyway.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I like 2D and First Person View games. In 2D you always know what is going on around you and in FPV you are supposed to know\/remember because you have the freedom to look wherever you want.<\/p>\n<p>Computer games allow us to be free like crazy and TPV is way too much fake freedom and a nightmare to produce to be the default game representation.<\/p>\n<p>Damn, it is!<\/p>\n<p> <\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have to say it: I hate 3D third person view.
