Europe mess

Europe. Full crisis.

Reading this article, quoting comments:

I’m not part of the political elite, yet I would prefer a European superstate over a 19th style provincial Europe with lots of small states constantly at each others throat, instead of working together. European integration wasn’t carried out in a very smart way so far, but the general idea behind it is still very attractive, even to many ordinary Europeans.

I definitely agree. I mean, it’s done. We have to do it. Otherwise, we can go back to our villages, bourgs and motherfucking Middle Age.

Can anybody tell me why, as Dutch citizens, my family has to pay EUR36,000 or more (and this is just into the current ESM) to finance Southern Europe, and on top af all without even being able to have any say in this? And then work until 67 and pay 52% income tax, to finance early retirement and large scale tax evasion in Italy and Greece? I’d prefer to just carry a few more currencies in my pocket when I go on holiday…

Dear Dutch friend, I totally get that but people are kind of assholes and in France for example, they don’t want to do what you already do. Those selfish bastards just don’t care. It’s like people love getting the good stuff from Europe, but not the obligations coming with it and what it takes to create a strong economy overall, benefiting everyone and their children. They play dumb.

Superstate sounds great, but it’ll either break-up or devolve into civil war within 20 years.

Look at the separatist movements in Belgium, Canada, the UK, or Italy over minor differences like language or a slightly different culture. Now imagine that in a country with 23 official languages and over 44 minority languages. You’d have to have a tyrant of the magnitude of Stalin just to hold it together.

Everyone from the Romans, to Charlemagne, to Napoleon have tried to build a European superstate but it has always failed.
The only possible way to achieve it would be through a forced homogenization of the languages and cultures like in America, and that would be almost impossible to do.

Very true. I’m French I’m over the language problem, I thought English would take over the world it did, it does and that’s the language we’re talking between Europeans too. End of the story. Countries are slow to understand and that’s why separatist movements will happen. Whatever.

To me as a German, Eurobonds would only be acceptable if accompanied by thorough structural reforms in the countries benefitting from those bonds, overseen by a European government of some sort ("Superstate"). Such a Superstate would have to give us, the Germans, a far greater say in the economic policy of other European countries than we already have, otherwise it would be a fluke (is that the right term?). But with the Greeks and Spanish already resenting the influence our government has on their lifes, can this work?
Anyways, a superstate would also be far more capable at holding casino-capitalism at bay. Which is probably why the Economist resents it. Which is probably a very good reason to actually take that route. Yay Superstate!

I get your point German friend and because you definitely have the numbers showing how Germany is doing good (after years of suffering), if we had a European government I’d totally leave you guys at the economic wheel. Problem is, that’s just me. As you know, French Spain and Italy are talking shit about you because you’re successful and that jokes are easy. It sucks. But we need you, some people love them some Germany as your exportation can tell you. Leave haters do their jobs, hating.

This is not a financial crisis. This is a political crisis, and the crisis is over our identity. Either we are Europeans first and Germans, Italians, Finns, Portuguese, French, Latvians, etc, second, or vice versa.

And that is why “Angela Merkel the German” shouldn’t be standing up in Brussels telling the Greeks to sort their house out. Instead, “Angela Merkel the European” should be standing up in Athens saying: “We still want you to be in the family and we’ll help you, but you need to accept your responsibilities.”

I always wanted to feel European first. That was the thing of my generation I thought. The generation that will be much less stupid than the previous one by putting our “local” identities second because national frictions don’t end well in Europe. I was wrong.

The mutualization of debt above 60% of GDP combined with a special tax to pay for it sounds good to me. However, France has to show serious signs of willingness to reform. I just can’t stand it that a country like France tries to walk away from the pain of austerity by making the Germans, Dutch and others foot the bill. If we’re going into the direction of more federalism, everybody should respect the rules. Those who don’t, must be forced out: no more euro and no mutualisation of debt for the sinners. France included, even if it is at the heart of Europe.

I apologize. You see France is in a weird position and I would say, a little poisoned by South Europe when it comes to manage stuff, corruption and all that. The Latin-not-too-much-the-morning-not-too-fast-the-afternoon side of France? Yes. We have unsolved structural problems and our new president is surely not going to address them.

Due to its geographic position, France had this very particular balance of enjoying life like South Europe lives it AND the disciplined mind of Northern Europe. We lost this balance because we got preoccupied with a fresh north African culture growing since 30 years in our suburbs but we should have been more preoccupied to define this French culture that still makes everybody dream around the world but which influence is also vanishing (when talking about Europe France is never in the discussion anymore).

It’s all fucked up now. It’s going to be hard but we need to make it happen, we’re Europe, main architect of what human civilization is today or we’re old ass retarded monkeys who can’t get real, let’s go son.

Talk To You

New music!

I started this track in L.A. with no sense of what I was going to do with it. Two weeks and a half in Paris with a talkbox and I shaped it into some romantic boogiefunklectronic music. Or something like that.

It’s never a great thing to force something over, like I did with the voice but that’s the thing to start something somewhere and finish it later, somewhere else. It’s always better at least to me to start and finish a track and not add features when it wasn’t part of the idea first. But, it’s a good exercise too, it pushes me to improvise more and it’s always in these moments that you discover something. “Uh interesting, I might keep that!”

My TV since years. Foobar’s 20 band spectrum, fuck you it’s better than 99% of what TV offers.

I spend a lot of time analyzing sound this way, from my own stuff to everything I can put my ears on. I notice something in the sound, I look at what’s going on in the world of frequencies. The little dance of each band is so fascinating to me.

The process of subtracting things is great too. Shaping by trimming things down, fat, not so clean or great licks, there’s so much of that. It’s scary and a bit of a let down when you created that stuff but it’s the moment the ego has to go away. “Bitch, I’m mixing fuck your bass it will be -6 dB again in her face that’s how it goes”

Sometimes I wish I was going faster but it’s pretty fast to do it everyday and not depending on anyone to put it out there.

Another track or two and I go back to more game development, I have some placeholder/dummy audio assets to create before going further into gameplay and then, I’ll have to get some programmer friend to help me out…

Gamusic industry

I think the game industry is following the music industry.

I heard digital sales could also be contracting but I don’t think it’s true. I think it’s going the same path music did that is, what and how people consume games is getting under the radar or more accurately, the radar is oversaturated: people play more and download, stream more games than ever. It became near impossible to track what’s going on.

Today, we have an insane amount of choice when it comes to games. From quirky free funny 5 minutes games to huge 100$ special edition productions where people play 75 hours on average, there’s something for everyone on every single support you can think of.

Exactly like music. You can totally love the last John Mayer and also enjoy an obscure artist on the rise. Charts don’t mean nothing today. The ocean is way too big.

So yeah, NPD is irrelevant like the top 40 for music was ten years ago.

The bad news is that it makes it difficult to predict a game’s success. Nothing can predict it, at all. Before we had some tools to push it in the good direction. Today marketing, budget, huge license, nothing can guarantee a game’s success. Activision, EA and Ubi are clueless and so are indie peeps (less, of course).

The good news is that it’s going to push game developers to disrupt to gain attention and sell. The bad news is that it’s going to make people copy and get rich with it. Like in music.

Unsolved

Sorry I have my PMS.

I’m annoyed with all the focus gay people receive about marriage equality. I think politics use that so that they don’t have to deal with shit touching a lot more people, stuff much more inconvenient for them.

Of course gay marriage. Gay anything, I don’t care.

Let’s talk about a big ass EQUALITY problem that I’m involved with and only changed in 30+ years for the worse.

The fact that a black dude will get profiled for no reason, will be arrested for marijuana possession (or with bad luck shot dead for no reason), which will fuck his life over, forever -bye jobs- is a huge problem that needs to be addressed while you guys are never getting arrested for that kind of shit and it’s obviously not because you’re not using pot, my dear white surrounding. It’s been going on for way too long and ruins our interracial relationships and our society, can’t you see it? We do not have “freedom equality” and this shit needs to stop. I repeat the numbers: 3 times more people incarcerated since the 80s, with black people incarcerated 7 times more than white people. This New Yorker article shows a 2005 report from one of those firm building prisons, stating:

For instance, any changes with respect to drugs and controlled substances or illegal immigration could affect the number of persons arrested, convicted, and sentenced, thereby potentially reducing demand for correctional facilities to house them.

It’s not even hidden, it’s in front of us: companies making profit off of people’s freedom (approximately half a million people are in prison for a drug offense today, an increase of 1,100% since 1981 in the US; same trend in France). If at the end dozens of thousands of black men are in prison, raping each other generations after generations, just so that some companies make money I mean yeah fuck your pets, fuck your private space rocket, fuck your marriage equality. When are you going to fight this bullshit, dear white friend? I thought we were friends!

And how about women earning 20% less on average and for whom we just don’t do shit, an inequality touching 50% of the population and it’s totally OK? And what is up with all these anti-abortion, anti-planned parenthood, anti-women’s rights shit going on these days? Fuck that.

Priorities. That’s all I’m saying.

Sometimes I feel that Barack Obama doesn’t help (btw he said he would stop feds raids over marijuana but didn’t). It makes white people say “see? It happened. Now leave us alone with your problems that we and only we could solve because we own the damn law… Muahahahaha.”

On FB IPO

It was pretty fascinating to see my French friends reactions and comments on the presidential elections, all of them automatically, in real time, in one location that I can see from my laptop or my phone. I’ve never had that opportunity before, give it up to the Zuck y’all.

The building of Facebook really impresses me. Mark doesn’t give a damn about money, I’m pretty sure that even before starting thefacebook.com, as a Harvard student from a nice New York Jewish family, he didn’t aim to get rich as fuck as he was already out of any need. As a programmer he wanted to build something never done before and something cool. The first 1+ billion people network, which is close to be a reality.

The letter that Zuckerberg included in Facebook’s IPO prospectus is even more direct about his priorities than Bezos’s was. Zuckerberg wrote this letter himself, a Facebook source says, and it begins with the following sentence: “Facebook was not originally created to be a company.”

Article: The Maturation of the Billionaire Boy-Man.

The fact that he started something just for fun, that this thing exploded, that he maintained control over it first technically -Twitter lost a LOT by not being reliable- and second business-wise to the point of having complete control over the company today, is a massive achievement for a 28 year old. That’s a lot of work. People forget the huge competition in social networks and how Facebook went at its own rhythm, slowly spreading and getting bigger while everybody else was failing. So much can go wrong at that scale, I mean…

It makes me sad too, because this would never happen in France. Not really because of the lack of money and investment, much more because of the risk-averse mentality deeply rooted in my country and because of the work laws, it would be impossible to hire and fire people rapidly as it will happen when growing a start-up in a really fast environment like software is. You need to rapidly find the good people which means you’re going to make mistakes, which means fire people. France’s system just doesn’t allow something like that (and it will not change for the next 5 years, it’s pretty much done).

People argue that FB doesn’t make money, that ads don’t work as great as Google’s. Mark basically got rid of the co-founder of Facebook when he found out that Eduardo had started to run ads on the site without telling him. He probably -like a lot of geeks- hates ads, he’s born in 1984, of course he thinks they’re dumb. He’s also smart enough to know that the ad economy is doomed, even TV knows it now. Ads are totally doomed on mobile as they cripple the experience so much, ask Android.

The point is, you don’t need this retarded way of getting money from users when you serve a closed network of 1 out of 8 people on earth. You can monetize so many services, useful services. There’s a better way to make money.

Even if he has already achieved something, I guess his mind state is the same as in 2004; "what’s the next right thing to build?”

And he needs to find it fast and make it happen nicely. So simple.

My first hero ever

You have to admit, that’s some neat cosplay shit.

This dude, known as Space Sheriff Gavan but called X-Or in France. No kidding, it’s one of my oldest memory. Sitting in the dark in the afternoon, watching his adventures. I was like four or five years old and it was obviously amazing.

Badass

So yeah, 1982 Space Sheriff totally copied the light saber from 1977 Star Wars  BUT the thing is, the first time I saw a light saber was through this dude half robot half alien and full human cop. And seriously, it was powerful too. Robot eyes lightening on and light saber -sorry, “laser blade”- appearing when the dude is angry? It was a HOLYSHIT moment that I still remember, with my eyes wide open, my little ass deep in the couch and my legs not touching the ground.

But wait, there’s more!

Now that’s a pose.

The robot alien sheriff had this crazy sidecar that is not a sidecar but whatevs, awesome. He would go super fast and jump out of it to do some Kung-Fu in the face of bad guys. But the thing that was killing me was that:

BYE

The hero had a spaceship that would transform into a MOTHERFUCKING MECHA DRAGON. Good god even today I think it’s cool. Imagine: when your first taste of fiction as a kid is that, a dude standing on top of a dragon robot with his red eyes and his light saber, it’s kind of over. Being cooler than that or surprising me with a story would be hard (I guess a large amount of mangas will change my mind later on).

Space sheriff is coming from another planet. He gets some help from sidekicks but he mostly operates alone. Justice, technology, design, funky music -show produced in the 70s- were part of Space Sheriff’s aesthetic and I realized that these themes followed me my entire life. And counting.

And maybe that’s why I hate Daft They Kinda Stole Everything Punk sometimes.

Atheists League

I think it’s the first time in my life that I feel that everything, everyone is in a precarious situation. At every scale, from family and close friends to the price of oil or the state of the game industry.

It seems like everything can happen and quite a lot in a negative way, in a matter of months. I feel that before, I always had an example of someone in control or something stable that I could look up to for a while. Not anymore. Maybe it was an illusion but it was comfy.

Things are chaotic and of course good can happen too from chaos, like Life. But the randomness and the lack of control of what is going on scares me. Because it shows how much we are technically advanced dumb animals and it doesn’t make me want to give a shit and care about people, even if I do. We’re like a disease on this little asteroid with water.

That might be the main problem for atheists, hard to keep smiling about the future and have hope for humans.

And this is where a religious person would add “you know, you should believe in something” making my point that we’re fucked.

Maybe we should unite.

Landing coaster

The well known smell of that plane. *boo*

The well known smell of Paris spring going toward summer. *yeah*

The bitter taste of a France being so disappointing. I’m not surprised having to find a third shop finally opened on a Monday or not hearing anything credible at all from our politics. Even my sister is rude, leaving shit stains all over the toilet and a trash can that smelled like a dead cat after using my apartment. France, taking care of business as usual I guess.

A few days ago I was in the desert and it was pretty different. So much shit in my mind. Brutal rollercoaster.

OK. Back to work.
