Can Matt Mullenweg save the internet?

“He’s turning Automattic into a different kind of tech giant. But can he take on the trillion-dollar walled gardens and give the internet back to the people?”

I hope so. He and WordPress are quite remarkable. Low key yet unavoidable. WordPress is everywhere yet it’s kind of hiding and not boasting in your face. It’s just here.

I find fascinating the fact that Matt is not aggressive in his business decisions, to a fault; I wish some of the Automattic tools were better, but that would mean going fast and break things and Matt knows that breaking things isn’t a good strategy for clients.

WordPress is on the “slow is smooth, smooth is fast” wave.

But considering how social media has evolved, WordPress could be nagging users, telling them that the open web is better than ever and available without any TOS. They are not. I think that’s smart. Letting people move by themselves is respectful, and the right thing to do. It is slow. There is no rush though.

The article ends with an Albert Camus quote: “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”

Yup.
