The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers

I’m finishing volume 3. Kind of speechless.

John the author went through hell and back four² times to get those books done, and I appreciate that. And you should too. Staggering amount of work, fascinating insights, emotions and discoveries. Oral history at its best!

Some thoughts:

  • Japanese gamedev really burned out in the late 90s with 3D and new consoles. The transition from 16-bit hardware to 32-bit decimated companies, individuals and brains.
  • Small teams (10ish) and short projects (less than a year) are best to make games because you get to be free to try things out, you get to work on multiple things and by the time you burn out, the game has to come out.
  • It’s staggering how much Hollywood inspired Japan at that time: The Thing, Star Wars, Alien, Blues Brothers, Cannonball, you name it. Meanwhile in Europe we were absorbing both continents; American movies and games, Japanese games and anime and our own. Crazy lore!
  • The ruthlessness of gamedev business from all the big players, from Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Square, etc. Stealing, suing, hiding.
  • The conflict between producing new games or keeping at making profitable sequels has always existed. Friction goes up: the more expensive game development is, the less you want to create a new IP. And the more you want to keep the sequel going. I think we hit a wall with Final Fantasy and its 16 titles (Square isn’t doing so well right now).
  • Which really highlights the 1985-1995 period as probably the most inventive in the history of computer games. Tons of “first” and polished concepts, some sequels but not like today.
  • The arcade machine. That thing that I would always look at anytime an adult would be dragging me into a bar in France. The arcade machine and its physical joystick, that you can abuse, it’s designed for. The physicality of playing games. Reading interviews of the creators of those games, is amazing.
  • I don’t really feel nostalgic, as I also remember well how much I wanted what is so basic now: access to most games from my couch. Using whichever controller I want.

The books came out 10 years ago. It’s great because a lot of those folks were thinking about the future of funding, smartphone games and all that. Lots of hope!

In 2024/2025, everything about the game industry is dire. 30-year-old small studios are on their last legs with no work. Big studios bleed money. Most publishers abuse their customers (dlc/loot box/season pass) who in turn abuse developers. And players know that spending thousands of hours in a grind fest is unhealthy. Machines are annoying update bots which are sometimes ready to let you play a game.

Thank you everyone involved to make this happen. This is invaluable.

Journalists spreading gloom and dumbness again

It is very much possible to build houses in natural surrounding without them burning down by:

  • Not having morons play with fireworks in the woods.
  • Designing and building fireproof houses for woody areas.

That’s it! Not very hard, is it.

This is vague, Sam

I feel like I need to go through this thing:

People are tool-builders with an inherent drive to understand and create, which leads to the world getting better for all of us.

Most people are not. The number of people with a drive to understand and create is small. So AI doesn’t help a majority of folks. It kind of destroys their world. Thinking “that’s too bad” is kind of sociopathic.

the economic growth in front of us looks astonishing, and we can now imagine a world where we cure all diseases, have much more time to enjoy with our families, and can fully realize our creative potential.

We already have had absurd economic growth. We’re already curing all diseases. We already have more time with families. What we don’t have is access to far more stability and sustainability. So many people have two jobs and can’t finish the month for fuck’s sake, Sam. That’s what the fuck is missing; a wealth shared directly and efficiently to most, not exclusively shared by a bunch of folks with yachts. Can AI help with spreading wealth? Yes, but it’s mostly about the social systems around it, not AI itself. Talk about that shit, man.

the price of luxury goods and a few inherently limited resources like land may rise even more dramatically.

Who gives a damn about luxury goods, really? Hierarchy and status are 1900s shenanigans. And why land would rise dramatically? Bury and stack your data centers, the fuck? Or are you thinking about becoming a literal landlord, preventing people from being off the grid and happy? I can see that scenario as well.

In particular, it does seem like the balance of power between capital and labor could easily get messed up, and this may require early intervention.

It’s not may, it’s needed. Right now. It doesn’t seem like, it already did! 2018 graduates can’t find more than internships and contract work. It is horrifying that the leading AI company’s CEO doesn’t see the contributing impact of its product in the current real world. But sees it as a probability.

It’s frustrating.

IF-THEN

IF AI and robots do most of the things we do, and that what we do is 50% of the time used to pay rent/mortgage,  THEN we need housing to become free.

IF housing is an unalterable need, and that we need to protect earth, THEN we need sustainable, efficient, 100+year-lasting buildings.

IF most of we consume can be shipped to our houses or used digitally, THEN some UBI and part-time jobs to cover our needs would suffice.

IF we make this happen THEN we can spend all the time we want with families and loved ones. THEN we can finally finish those fucking, long ass games.

THEN we can focus on being the best we can be at anything we set our goals on.

Let’s fucking go.

If I was a journalist at the WH rn

“Mr. President. It seems like you cannot stop lying and it is so egregious, that we all are getting diarrhea from listening to your mouth moving. Could you elaborate on how you are going to stop doing that?”

“Mr. President, your dog Leon the drug addict still looks extremely interested in going to Mars. Could you and NASA strap him to a rocket ship and grant his wish?”

Democracy under attack fuck a NBA trade

The pattern is this:

  • Something fucking insane is happening, like the US government under attack by a dude not in the fucking government.
  • You jump on social media.
  • You saturate the fuck out of your mind with takes from the most hilarious and stupid ones to the most serious, expert ones.
  • You do intensely, not leaving a millimeter of yourself unconquered.
  • Your analytic side, your emotional side, your balance, everything gets to crumble and make you numb.
  • After anywhere between 30mn to hours, you are numbnumb.
  • To the point of not remembering/knowing what you are supposed to be doing (fight back).
  • So you jump on entertainment, which is completely endless today, right there in our pockets or at arm’s length.
  • Something insane happens again. Etc.

To move away from this loop because things have become urgent:

  • Stop using social media so much, which means uninstall this shit from your phone. Forever. If you can’t do that, understand that you need help. Even better, quit.
  • Use all the tools available in democracy to push back authoritarian BS. Get involved, etc. Never stop.
  • Truly disconnect from devices, breathe longer.
  • Teach yourself stuff, possibly useful ones. Don’t ever stop learning.
  • Build resilience in any way you can. It’s always useful.

The numbness is rampant. We need to wake up. Now.

btw

How Artificial Intelligence, which is one of the most international thing we’ve ever created, is seen as US VS China “war”?

Who the fuck is saying that? Why is everything so fucking inane?
